When a patient comes to see me presenting a myriad of different health issues, one of the first places that I take a deeper look at is gastrointestinal health. From immunity to mood and more, we’re increasingly discovering just how integral supporting this system is for overall well being.
Our gastrointestinal tract is elegant in both its form and function.
From our taste buds, which evolutionarily helped us discern healthy foods from harmful ones, to our stomach acids, which kill harmful microbes, to our small intestine where nutrients are absorbed, and finally to elimination, every function is uniquely designed.
In modern times, there are many factors that can lead to compromised digestive health. We know that given the times in which we live and common lifestyle choices, the health of many peoples’ GI systems is greatly diminished.
How many of your patients have undergone rounds of antibiotics, were born via cesarean section, not breastfed or consume excessive amounts of sugar? All of these factors significantly jeopardize digestive health, the microbiome and our ability to detoxify.
When I see a patient with many health challenges, I begin by assessing what can be a primary factor – the GI tract. In the video below, I share more about why taking this approach is so important.
